San Rock Art

Our South African heritage of San rock paintings is usually seen as a rich record of the San culture. So it is, but there were some really incredible artists.

Consider- they had no photographic references for visual imagery, nor would the animals pose for them. Thus all images rendered had to come from astute observation and memory.

Consider- they did not write like we do, or type, or any of the pervasive manual tasks we perform every day as a matter of course. So how did the rock artists develop the manual dexterity required to render such sensitive and beautiful images?
